I was asked to do a little sharing about ‘peace’ at FGA Generation One Campus service, and as I researched peace, I learnt some pretty awesome things about what this fruit of the Spirit was, and also what it wasn’t. Here are a few things that I learned about God’s peace throughout the week about this gift that God has given us.
A widely used word, ‘peace’ has been used in so many ways. We have phrases such as ‘make peace, not war’, the hippie ‘Peace, Bro!’ and the peace sign that we use when we take pictures. The Bible talks about peace frequently. To better understand what peace is, this is what it is not – disagreement, discord, worry, frustration, and disharmony.
In John 14:27, Jesus says ‘Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid’. This peace that Jesus speaks about enables believer to remain calm even in the most difficult situations. It is not obtainable by those who are not at peace with Him, as it is given to those who believe in Him (whether we accept this gift is another matter!). In many of Paul’s letters in the New Testament, Paul wrote ‘God of peace’ when he wrote his salutations – only God alone can bring peace.
The Perfect Example Of Peace
Jesus was the example of perfect peace. In John Chapter 18:28 onward and the first part of John Chapter 19, Jesus was questioned by Pilate over and over again. This was just before his long journey to Golgotha where he was crucified for our sins. Jesus knew what was going to happen. He knew that he would be beaten, he knew he would be crucified; and yet, he was able to answer Pilate without any fear. He was calm, and his peacefulness was evident in how he spoke.
This peace that Jesus had cannot be found in the world. The world’s peace is shallow and unfulfilling. Most people chase after peace in an attempt to get away from their problems. Many turn to alcohol, drugs, work, retail therapy to obtain that momentary calmness. However, apart from God, we will never be able to find peace. We may be able to find fleeting moments when everything seems right, but that moment will always pass because only God can give you peace that will last.
If we lack peace, it is not because of our parents or how we were raised. It is also not because of what has happened in the past, nor is it due to bad experiences. It is because we do not have a relationship with God; or we do not realize the significance of what we believe in and therefore, have not accepted the gift of peace.
Philippians 4:6-7 tells us to ‘be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
The Results of Peace
The first result of having God’s peace is calm, untroubled hearts; regardless of external circumstances. We may be facing troubles in every area of our lives, and let’s face it, we will face troubles in our lives here on earth. But with God’s peace, we do not have to have troubled hearts. Matthew 6:34 says ‘Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.’
The second result of having God’s peace is sound decision-making. Colossians 3:15 says ‘And let the peace of God rule in your hears, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.’ The word ‘rule’ in Greek is ‘brabeuo’ which means ‘to act as umpire’. Hence, Paul is urging the Colossians (and us) to depend on the peace of Christ to become the umpire in the decision that we have to make in life. Most of the time we tend to make decisions with our emotions, rational/logical thinking, or by making a pros and cons list. While these ways are not wrong, we also need to let God’s peace be the one that makes the calls when we do not know what to do.

Do you want to have God’s peace today? If you do not have his peace, then you might just want to ‘be still, and know that He is God.’ (Psalm 46:10)
