Christian Care Centre: One of the Most Successful Drug Rehabilitation Centre in the Country

Many manage to operate naturally and live life to their full potential once more after having been in Christian Care Centre (CCC). Located now at Hulu Langat, Selangor, the rehabilitation center has been around for numerous years since their start in 1978.

Current premise

A Christian brother by the name of Eugene Tan through the calling of God started the center in 1978. The first ministry point was situated in Klang, a single story link house which can accommodate a maximum of 14 residents. Subsequently, the center shifted to a rented TNB bungalow on a hill which can take in more residents for rehab. After 3 initial years in Klang and the need to return the bungalow to TNB, the center was re-located to Kg.Subang which was not far from the old Subang Airport. In those days the center was surrounded by farms and forest.

In the year 1984, it became under the umbrella of Full Gospel Assembly Church (FGA). This particular centre is a pioneer for many other rehab centres that came later on. It is known to be one of the oldest centres in Malaysia which specifically caters to adult men with an age range of 18 to 55 years old.

CCC is a rehabilitation centre that helps individuals recovers from substance abuse. It is a centre that believes in the total cure of the whole man, that it is something that only God can provide. Matthew Wong, Leader of CCC, says that, “Many lives have been saved!” and amount that totaled from about 800 to 1000 people. Their mission is to seek, restore and set a path for God.

In their mission, the centre incorporates a step by step programme that will eventually help individuals recover from their ailment. This particular programme specifically places focus on three aspects namely, vocational, recreational, as well as spiritual. Their success in regaining life into the people who come in are due to five factors that are namely, due to their rehabilitation method, the Bible principles that are taught, the teaching of social and personal living skills, work therapy and vocational training, and last but not least it has of course gained success because it is a Church-based ministry in which students are able to re-enter and integrate themselves back into society through the active participation of the Church. At the end of the programme, if students are deemed stable they will graduate from the programme with a certificate. They however, are advised to stay back for another 6 months to a year in order for the centre to ensure that they are fully capable to take care of themselves. During this time, they are advised to help, or remain at the centre if they choose to go out and work so that they can be monitored easily.

Many of the residents at the rehab centre have either been found in the streets, have come by themselves, or they are brought in by their families. Matthew says, “At the beginning, many struggles in staying here, but after the third month they will feel at home and start joining in the programme.” Many of them have graduated from CCC’s step by step programme and have managed to find their calling. Some stayed back and help out at the center. Some are now running their own businesses or perform circular work according to their own potential, while some others operate their own centre to help others that are in need.

According to Matthew, the programme that they have has a success rate of 70%. The balance 30 % residents unfortunately relapse or fall back. With well developed programmes like these many are able to live life to the fullest and are able to help others as well from what they have learnt. It is people like Matthew and many others that have regained themselves from drug abuse after following the programme that inspires many others there that they themselves are able to do the same. With God’s grace Matthew was inspired to change while at the rehab centre after reading a particular scripture from Galatians 2:20 that says, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Not so long later after he graduated from the programme, he stumbled upon James 4:7, 8 which says, “Submit you, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” That was when his own life started to turn around and now his calling from God is to lead CCC.
